There is nothing better than a distance learning program for working professionals or non-traditional students. However, there isn’t much variety when it comes to American History programs at the doctoral level.
Take advantage of two online graduate programs in American history to advance your career.
Liberty University Offers an Online PhD in History
Through its College of Arts and Science doctoral program in history, Liberty University offers an accredited online learning experience. With 8-week courses and flexible scheduling, this program is suitable for working adults.

In Depth Curriculum Overview
At Liberty University, the PhD in History requires 72 credit hours and is expected to take four years to complete. Besides conducting original research in American history, students will complete online courses in historical professions, public history, and American entrepreneurship.
In addition to the core curriculum, 18 credit hours will be offered in historical methods, historical research, and historiography.
Liberty University offers nine specializations and electives specifically in American history so that you can tailor your education to your interests. Reading and dissertation courses will be required prior to completing your program.
In order to be accepted into Liberty, you must fill out a program application. Moreover, you will need to submit graduate test scores and transcripts for previous programs. To be considered for admission, you must hold a master’s degree.

In her comments, Gwynnedolynne James noted that the school provided “great benefits for graduate students like myself who have families, full-time jobs, and participate in community events.” Students who have busy schedules can still succeed with LUO’s 100% online degree programs.”
Arizona State University Offers a Hybrid PhD in History
Listed 69th by U.S. News & World Report, the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies offers a hybrid PhD in History. On-campus and online courses are offered in a hybrid program.
Areas of Concentration
It is possible for American history students to concentrate in North American or U.S. There are three concentration options available. Both thematic and geographical fields of study are covered by these concentrations, or fields. Concentrations in U.S. history, indigenous peoples, and politics and policy, for example, could be included in a U.S. history program.
The concentration is guided by a close relationship with faculty. On campus visits and coursework will be required as part of the relationship with faculty and mentoring.
Examining the Curriculum
The program requires you to complete 84 credits in order to graduate. There are three types of credits: core, research, and electives. In the core courses, you will study history methodology and global history in depth. In your concentration, you will study the American experience, race and culture, religion, migration, and North American cultural landscapes.
In addition to the dissertation, seminar, and research required for your degree, you’ll also complete a seminar.
You must complete the online application to be considered for the program. Aside from filling out the application, the school also requires GRE scores, references, a writing sample, and a statement of purpose. The transcripts showing that you have completed a master’s program must also be submitted.
What Students Say

Lack of Online Ph.D. in History Programs
It can be difficult to find PhD programs in American History via distance education. The most common route to completing your dissertation and research is to enroll in an on-campus program due to the connection you need with faculty.
There are, however, hybrid and online programs such as those offered at Liberty and ASU that provide you with the flexibility to complete your coursework when it is convenient for you.
whether you complete an online or on-campus program with online courses, be sure to research your program to make sure you are getting the best value for your money.
